A new startup is betting that the people who helped build today’s leading AI chatbots can now help invent tomorrow’s medicines. Warp Sciences has launched with a $215 million Series A round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, one of the largest early-stage AI financings of the year.
The team reads like a who’s who of applied AI. Kevin Weil, formerly chief product officer at OpenAI, is joined by Manohar Plauri, who previously led AI work at Meta, and DJ Patil, who served as the first chief data scientist of the White House. Premji Invest, Mayfield, IVP, Lux Capital and Meesho Ventures also participated, alongside angel investors with OpenAI roots, including Mark Chen, Bob McGrew and Sarah Friar.
The mission is to shrink the years and billions of dollars it takes to develop a new medicine. Warp plans to combine machine learning models with robotic lab systems that can run experiments far faster than human teams working alone.
It is a familiar pattern: talent migrating from consumer chatbots such as ChatGPT into scientific research, where open model ecosystems like Hugging Face already play a growing role. Drug discovery also demands enormous, well-organized datasets, the kind of data engineering pipeline platforms like Databricks are built for.
The funding scale suggests investors see drug discovery as one of the next frontiers where AI can make a measurable difference. Whether the lab robots deliver breakthrough treatments is now the question to watch.
