OpenAI Dots: Always-On AI Agents Arrive for Paid Users

OpenAI is pushing its assistants beyond answering one question at a time. Its Dots agents, first introduced at the company’s DevDay conference on September 29, are built to keep working in the background, with October 27 reporting setting out the rollout for paying subscribers.

The key idea is persistence. Each Dot runs in its own cloud-based computer environment rather than living only inside a browser tab. That means it can monitor a project, follow up on messages, or work through a long data task even when the user’s own device is switched off.

Dots grew out of OpenAI’s coding tools. Instead of only producing text, they generate and run code to connect with software, reaching more than 4,000 integrated applications, including Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Drive. For everyday users, that code-first approach turns a chatbot into something closer to a digital colleague.

OpenAI has also introduced Space, a shared workspace where Dots sit alongside human team members. Roles can be assigned inside a Space, and outputs such as drafted documents or analyzed spreadsheets can be stored, reviewed, and refined together over the course of a longer project.

At launch, Dots are positioned as a premium feature for ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise subscribers, with Pro subscribers initially limited to creating one Dot each. Pro subscribers in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are currently excluded from the rollout, with no timeline given for their access.

The move underlines a wider shift in the market: the value of an AI tool is increasingly measured not by a single answer, but by how much unfinished work it can reliably carry forward. Tools built on Codex show how coding ability can become the bridge between a model and the software people already use every day.
