AMD has announced it will acquire World Labs, the spatial-intelligence startup founded by renowned AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal worth roughly $8.2 billion. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval. When it does, Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to chair and CEO Lisa Su.
What World Labs actually builds
World Labs, founded in January 2024 by Li and co-founders Justin Johnson, Ben Mildenhall, and Christoph Lassner, raised $1.23 billion across two funding rounds before AMD came calling. It builds world models — AI systems that generate navigable 3D environments from a single photo, sketch, or line of text. Its first commercial product, Marble, turns those inputs into downloadable 3D scenes compatible with VR headsets, on a subscription starting at $20 a month.
AMD is not alone in chasing this space. Nvidia has spent two years building world foundation models under its Omniverse platform, and Google DeepMind’s Genie 3 generates interactive environments in real time. The pitch is aimed squarely at robotics and self-driving teams that need synthetic training data instead of millions of miles of real-world footage.
Why a chipmaker wants a model lab
The logic is strategic rather than product-driven. AMD makes money selling GPUs and accelerators, and it has spent years arguing performance and software against Nvidia. Owning a team building frontier world models gives AMD an early window into how the next generation of robotics and physical-AI workloads will stress its chips — and lets it shape future hardware and software roadmaps around where spatial AI is actually going.
It is a steep bet: World Labs was valued at roughly $5 billion in its February funding round, and AMD is paying well above that for a two-year-old company with one commercial product. The deal is AMD’s largest since its $49 billion Xilinx acquisition in 2022.
The race for world models sits alongside the text-model frontier, where assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini dominate. See our ChatGPT vs Claude comparison for a look at today’s leading models.
