Boston-based ASI, formerly known as Air Space Intelligence, has raised a $325 million Series C round valuing the company at $3 billion, as its AI expands from managing air traffic to modeling power grids and military operations hours, days, and weeks ahead.
The round was led by Spark Capital, Citadel, and Meritech Capital, with Gradient — which led ASI’s pre-seed round — also participating. Founder and chief executive Phillip Buckendorf says that while the broader tech industry spent hundreds of billions teaching AI to manipulate words, ASI focuses on AI systems that manage and control physical assets.
The funding follows a string of major government wins. In June, the Federal Aviation Administration awarded ASI an $875 million, 12-year contract to manage US air traffic with AI — a deal for which ASI beat Palantir and Thales. The system blends weather, flight paths, and controller staffing to predict congestion, and the FAA began using it in September around Washington before a planned nationwide rollout. The US Army also awarded the company a five-year, $99 million contract for next-generation command and control, while National Grid uses ASI’s tools to plan and run its electricity network.
The new capital will push ASI further into energy, logistics, and military field operations, and expand its Boston engineering teams. For organizations assessing enterprise AI, our AI tool buyer’s guide covers what to ask before signing.
