Cloud marketplace giant Pax8 has stepped into one of the messiest corners of AI adoption: the AI tools already running inside small businesses without anyone’s permission. At its Beyond EMEA conference in Copenhagen, the company unveiled 8os, described as the first operating system built for the agentic workforce, alongside 8bot, a packaged AI coworker that IT partners can deploy inside their clients’ teams.
The pitch centers on governance. Pax8’s own SMB AI Pulse surveys say nine in ten small businesses are using or experimenting with AI, yet only 23% have a documented policy covering it — and nearly half have discovered unsanctioned “shadow AI” in the past six months. 8os is built on Pax8’s existing commerce platform, which serves more than 47,000 IT providers and 800,000 small businesses, and folds agents and models from different vendors into one managed workforce with per-client rules for ownership, usage, and billing. Each customer’s memory and context stay separate, so agents grow more useful to that client over time.
8bot gives partners a ready-made managed AI assistant for everyday employee tasks, governed through 8os rather than left to individual experimentation. Under the hood, the platform uses technology from Together AI and AWS Bedrock, opening the door to lower-cost open-source models instead of frontier models for every task — a deliberate move to keep always-on AI coworkers economically viable for smaller firms.
For anyone tracking how AI copilots and AI assistants are managed in the workplace, Pax8 is betting the real opportunity sits beneath them: the layer that governs, monitors, and bills AI work. Our Gemini vs Copilot comparison breaks down the two assistants IT teams most often evaluate.
