Price, not just capability, is now deciding which AI model powers major coding platforms. The Information reports that Replit has shifted most of its AI spending from Anthropic to OpenAI after OpenAI offered a discount of more than 30 percent on a contract worth over $100 million a year. Replit, OpenAI, and Anthropic have not publicly confirmed the financial terms.
Replit CEO Amjad Masad has said OpenAI is now the preferred partner for Replit Agent, citing performance, economics, and the strength of the partnership. The picture is messier than a clean breakup: Replit says it remains model-agnostic and users can still choose Claude or other supported models, and people familiar with the partnership have pushed back on claims that the Anthropic relationship ended entirely. What changed is the default — and defaults drive most usage.
Replit is not alone. The same reporting says Rippling raised OpenAI’s share of its coding workload from 16 percent to 52 percent while Anthropic’s share fell from 57 percent to 18 percent, and DataCamp’s CEO said OpenAI pricing cut his company’s costs by 80 to 90 percent. A US bank reportedly doubled its ChatGPT seats to 500 at no extra charge, paying under $7 per user against a usual rate of $20 or more.
For teams choosing a coding assistant, the takeaway is that the model behind the product is increasingly swappable — which makes the surrounding product, pricing, and workflow matter as much as raw benchmark scores.
