Sunlight AI Raises $17.4M to Run Medical Practices

Sunlight AI has launched with $17.4 million in seed funding to become the operating layer for independent physician practices in the United States. The round was led by Basis Set Ventures founder Lan Xuezhao, with participation from Sofeon Ventures, Social Leverage, Actions Capital, Overlook Ventures, Early Light Ventures, and a group of healthcare investors and founders.

Rather than selling software alone, Sunlight pairs practice-management infrastructure and human expertise with AI — and is buying the services firms it works with, starting with Bradford Medical Associates, then embedding AI into their operations. The strategy, sometimes called the “AI roll-up,” has gained traction as a way to deploy AI where services businesses already have scale.

Founder and CEO Sina Chehrazi previously founded Nayya, an employee-benefits technology company serving more than 5 million employees. The company says its first 2026 cohort of arbitration clients recovered multiples of payers’ initial payment amounts at lower fees than competing vendors.

The pitch targets a real squeeze: US practice operating expenses rose roughly 11% in 2025 while physician payment has fallen for years, and fewer than one in five physicians now remain independent. AI copilots for billing and documentation are already appearing in the market — Hyro automates patient conversations for healthcare providers, Kore.ai builds enterprise conversational AI, and Trinka assists with professional and medical writing. Our AI tool buyer’s guide covers how to evaluate AI tools before adopting them.
